DAO is a general term for "decentralized autonomous organisations", which basically means an entity like a company-like entity empowered with funds, with the decision-making implemented in code. [13:10:51] And then you have Slock.it, which created a particular DAO for themselves, where decision-making is voted on by token (share) ownership, and that gets referred to as "The (Slock.it) DAO" [13:11:46] It's a bit annoying when people just call Slock.it's DAO "the DAO"; it's like calling Wikipedia "the wiki". [17:27:35] pjdelport: now many are there though? isn't it the first and only DAO right now? [17:28:21] erg: Depends on your threshold criteria, I guess. [17:28:26] that's how they're branding it, at least [17:28:37] There were many things before that count as DAOs by the general definition. [17:28:54] This is certainly the biggest and most serious / weighty / well-funded one, by a large margin. [17:29:28] So you could certainly count the earlier things as mere toys, by comparison. [17:29:48] But then it's more a question of toy / novelty DAOs versus "real" DAOs [17:30:50] erg: To put it in context, one of the standard Ethereum intermediate tutorials is creating your own DAO: https://www.ethereum.org/dao [17:56:59] pjdelport: i see. i havent been following the ethereum project much [18:37:30] * rgrinberg [rgrinberg!~rgrinberg@74-216-184-222.dedicated.allstream.net] has quit (Ping timeout: 260 seconds).
