[16:00:41] bmp: not bad, i fixed the SSL struct on factorcode and it's been stable for a couple weeks [16:01:01] bmp: heard LCD soundsystem in the freezing rain on halloween, good times [16:01:50] the parser can do everything but functors, but those need rethinking anyway. slava has a talk about generics in swift that is pretty inspirational on those lines [16:02:21] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ctS8FzqcRug [16:02:39] 2017 LLVM Developers Meeting: "Implementing Swift Generics" [16:03:54] they have a generics protocol that allows separate compilation and specialization without recompilation [16:07:05] er specialization if appropriate, and a default generic implementation if you would have had to recompile [16:49:36] * scottj [scottj!~s@unaffiliated/scottj] has quit (Quit: leaving). Being a manager ate up my soul and spat the rest out for breakfast. [19:06:50] I'm just a dev again. It's much more pleasant. [19:20:38] which parts of managing were the hardest? [19:23:55] Time. [19:24:00] Meetings. [19:24:09] I was managing about a third of KA's eng team by the time I left. [19:24:13] I had about 20 hours of meetings a week. [19:27:01] oh wow. that's too much, man [19:32:47] I think most engineers spend at least 10 hours a week on non-engineering work (including email.) [19:44:47] That's true, but also different; that's time I decide how I want to spend, and my computer usually doesn't come to me telling me that Bob groped them or Sue is being a jerk in meetings. [19:51:27] bmp: hmm. That doesn't sound like a great place to work in any role. [19:52:07] I’m exaggerating. [19:52:22] But people did frequently come to me with personal or interpersonal issues. [19:54:22] bmp: Isn't that more of a job for HR? [19:55:36] If someone actually came to me with a groping incident, yes, but people not getting along with each other is 100% mine to deal with. [19:56:23] HR only gets involved if it’s something truly egregious, like the above, or if I need to fire someone, in which case they’re mostly involved to make sure I can document appropriately or have severance ready, depending. [20:09:00] The adage that HR is against the employees is, I think, a bit overgeneric--they've been highly supportive everywhere I work--but they also are more about the legal aspects of working at the company than trying to figure out whether Sue's actually a jerk, or whether the other employee's over-sensitive, or whether Sue might be a jerk but is worth it because her productivity makes up for it, etc. [20:21:28] For most employees, an unexpected visit with HR is a bad thing. Otherwise, they are mostly invisible, hiding in an office on the other side of the building. [20:23:36] Sure, there's the occasional presentation from HR about benefits or something nice like that. [20:25:04] But I think they have those to try to convince others that they are just regular humans, and not cold, calculating drones. [20:25:15] But I don't think anyone falls for it.
